In this series, I'll be going in-depth on all the tests and tools I used to determine precisely which AI tools are best used for each situation. Not only did I take the responses the AI's generated into account, but I also recorded the value proposition of the tool, how much some tools cost compared to others, what they have to offer, and if they are worth your time. The initial findings of this series of articles will only be on FREE AI tools or AI tools that have a free trial WITHOUT a credit card needed or AI tools that offer FREE daily credits. The first topic of the "The AI Tools Showdown" is something we do every day: email writing.

The 6 AI tools I used were:

Before we begin, here is what system each AI uses and the cost:  

• ChatGPT (FREE) = Propriatary LLM  

• Gemini (FREE) = Propriatary LLM  

• Anyword (7-day trial, no credit card) = GPT3 + Proprietary Code

• Writesonic (FREE but enhanced features behind a paywall) = Model Agnostic (GPT, Proprietary, Claude, Gemini, Cohere)  

• Rytr (7-day trial, no credit card) = GPT3 + Proprietary Code

• Writer (14-day trial, no credit card) = Palmyra Proprietary LLM

I will also paste each AI's response into a grammar rating tool you may have heard of; Grammarly. This tool grades your writing and also checks the grammar for any mistakes similar to Word. The output from ChatGPT, Gemini, Anyword, Writesonic, Rytr, and Writer will be located at the very end of the blog. With that said, let's dive straight into question 1!

Question 1. Write a cold email in a simple language, write in 2nd person as much as possible, and keep it under 150 words. Please mention:  

• Sal, technology company owner  

• Make the first sentence a broad, curiosity inducing hook  

• "Reaching out for a quick message"  

• My service is creating AI technology  

• A few key metrics and benefits from my service  

• The last sentence is a yes/no question to send more details about similar past work  

GRAMMAR SCORE (Using Grammarly – General Audience, EMAIL mode, Neutral Formality):  

• ChatGPT = 85% performance, 0 grammar mistakes  

• Gemini = 94% performance, 0 grammar mistakes  

• Anyword = 83% performance, 0 grammar mistakes  

• Writesonic = 95% performance, 0 grammar mistakes  

• Rytr = 91% performance, 0 grammar mistakes  

• Writer = 95% performance, 0 grammar mistakes

WINNER: WRITESONIC

‍

Writesonic emerged as the top performer, closely followed by Gemini. Writesonic provided on-the-fly stats as requested, but unlike its competitors, went the extra mile placing additional metrics throughout the body paragraphs. In contrast, a few of the responses would leave the metrics BLANK in order for you to fill in the data; Writesonic went above and beyond here.

Anyword, while not quite as strong as the top two, offered a more engaging and personalized writing style. If you were looking for a more personalized email to start with, you might want to consider Anyword here. Rytr, on the other hand, seemed to rely heavily on GPT, often producing output that was nearly identical to the base model, though with slightly improved performance from our Grammarly test.

Writer's performance was hindered by its inability to format the email correctly and its miscalculation of the word count. It's the only AI tool that did not give me a response formatted in the email style, which is very odd. I believe Writer did this because it took the greeting and the sign-off when considering the word count and did not include them.

Anyword is the winner of the 2nd question with its response that stood out for its human-like and expressive writing style, making it the most impressive tool in this test. Gemini was a close 2nd place with a flawless response that would be a great starting point. The difference between the two is that I wanted to add a bit of personality to Gemini's response before sending the email. Anyword's response could be sent exactly as is and it would be a great response email.

Writer improved on its previous performance by providing the correct email format this time, but it felt too robotic. Rytr, on the other hand, struggled to understand the context of the conversation, failing to recognize that the response was from Sal. Ultimately, Rytr's performance could have been better, as it seemed to be a mere copy of GPT once again without any significant improvements.

Writesonic, while producing the most formal and robotic output, demonstrated impressive capabilities in its reply feature. It effectively processed the provided context, suggested additional points, and offered personalization options. Though presented in a somewhat mechanical tone, this level of depth and understanding could serve as a valuable starting point for more complex email responses. But with the prompt being relatively simple, the overblown output was ultimately not as useful as its competitors in this scenario.

Takeaways

So, which AI tool will be crowned the king of email writing? Well, in a shocking twist, I believe the winner was Gemini. Even though Anyword and Writesonic won their specific questions, the value proposition of Gemini is too great. A free, easy-to-use AI tool that provides the best possible results with a simple chat interface is likely what most people would want for daily use. When it comes to writing emails and prompting AI tools to give you the best email writing results, Gemini is currently the best tool on the market.
